Study Task 5

The purpose of this visual journal is to delve deeper into Liverpool’s culture, focusing on how it has changed, been shaped over time and what role the story of the Liverbirds has played in that. It also draws upon both primary and secondary sources. Furthermore, this blog will be a critical and analytical reflection on the practical work produced.

The research was also successful to some degree, although more could have been done  to investigate the themes in different ways. This could have been prevented by thinking and planning ahead, which would have given more structure to the investigation. For instance, this would have allowed time to interview people on the streets about what they thought of Liverpool. Certain buildings could have been researched and looked into in more depth, such as obtaining the original construction plans, seeing how they have developed and changed over time. The research that was done was informative, showing a lot about architecture and how different cities are influenced by each other. Overall the work produced for this project was to a high standard and showed understanding of the themes and context of practice.

Different cities have different skylines. Skylines make the city identifiable as they contain the most recognisable buildings the city. Liverpool is no exception with buildings like the longatude and lattatude buildings,  the liverbuilding, the cathedrals, the liverpool city tower and the art gallery. In comparison to a regular skyline, keith drury does something different. He has created beautiful skylines using a variety of methods such as Maya and plasticine.  "Keith told how he uses 3D software and a touch-sensitive drawing board to mould pieces of virtual plasticine into buildings, vehicles and other objects. Every single element in his pictures is a virtually moulded 3D model - even the tiny clouds. He said: “Each individual model is incredibly detailed - you can even virtually go inside the little houses to look through the windows and see the view outside. “The first process is sculpturing, then colouring, then picture composition. It’s a similar process to traditional art yet it’s all done on a computer.”

"Keith can not remember a time when he did not draw or make 'stuff' but his introduction into the more serious art world began when the owner of a prestigious gallery took Keith under his wing lending him works of international artists to take home and copy. On return the gallery owner would assess Keith's style and then test him with something completely different. Now Keith after years of trying new things and mediums has developed his own unique style. "

It will also make it more appealing to a wider audience.

Kiki's Delivery Service.
According to Miyazaki, it's "a mishmash of various locales, like Napoli, Lisbon, Stockholm, Paris, and even San Francisco. Therefore, one side is like the shores of the Mediterranean sea, but another side seems to border on the Baltic sea." Miyazaki and his main staff visited Visby on the Swedish island of Gotland, and they also visited Stockholm. They shot 80 rolls of film in Stockholm and Visby, gathering location images as inspiration for the scenes in Koriko. For the most part, Koriko is composed of images of Stockholm. A side street in Stockholm's old city, Gamla Stan, is one model. (Tsao, 2016)

Instead, the movie’s metropolitan portmanteau is a marvel of architectural alchemy. Shibuya skyscrapers with pulsing video screens hug San Francisco’s iconic Transamerica Pyramid. Victorian Mission duplexes line hilly San Fransokyo neighborhoods, aglow from the pink-white light of Japanese cherry blossoms in full bloom below. Trains from the Yamanote and Chuo lines, two of Tokyo’s central and most popular railways, stream by on elevated tracks. The sprawling Yokohama Bay Bridge connects the financial district to San Francisco’s East Bay, which may well be home to Oaksaka and Berkyoto in this Japan american universe
